Assessing the Funding Landscape for a Burgeoning Research Platform.
I was commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation Creativity and Culture program to write a report on the state of funding for a burgeoning art and technology practice called New Media Art. That being creative practices based on advanced technologies that push the boundaries of how those technologies are typically applied. This included creative works made from computer programming, electronics, advanced computational algorithms, machine learning and artificial intelligence, advanced imaging technologies, sound synthesis, and more. Through the Rockefeller Foundation, I was provided access to many national and international private foundation leaders to interview them about their funding programs, priorities, and strategies. |
My report discussed drivers for supporting New Media Art in the U.S., Europe, and Canada with interview insights and funding analysis. From my analysis, I created a change management framework and network building resources for non-profit organizations. The report was used to support several initiatives in the U.K., Denmark, Finland, and Latvia. I was invited to co-lead a consortium in Riga, Latvia to present the change management framework to community media art centers and museums in Northern and Eastern Europe.
Report Abstract:
New Media Art/ New Funding Models report investigates the current state of funding for new media artists. The emphasis is on the support structures for innovative creative work that utilizes advances technologies as the main vehicle for artistic practice.
Twenty-two individual artists/innovators, organizers, directors, and foundation program officers involved in the international new media arts community were interviewed. Participants were asked a number of questions regarding how they frame new media art, concerns from the field, funding histories, and concepts for funding models. Several participants are involved in new initiatives that bridge the for-profit and non-profit funding sectors including artists’ research centers, innovative business models, new approaches for traditional funding sources, incubators, venture funding, and leveraging community.
