I held the first joint appointment as Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University between the School of Art in the College of Fine Arts and Human Computer Interaction Institute in the School of Computer Science. While at CMU, I integrated my research and creative practices into teaching and research in areas of digital media arts, computational creativity, and critical practices in design and human computer interaction.
My students, research assistants, and advisees represented an academic range from freshmen to Ph.D. in Fine Arts, Human Computer Interaction, Design, Drama, Entertainment Technology, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Architecture, and Cognitive Science. My strategy to address this learning environment was driven by the goal to strengthen students’ self-efficacy in new areas of learning that complimented their core studies. Art students were introduced to computational techniques for creative and cultural expression. Engineering students were encouraged to mindfully apply their technical skills for broader impact. All students were taught to create within the historical and social contexts of their disciplines. |
