EMS 1 is an introduction to a range of artistic practices on the Macintosh with many crossover potentials to the PC and other platforms for creating computer-based and interactive art. This class is an introduction to computer-based art making using the CFA Multimedia cluster as a studio. Technical and theoretical issues surrounding the emergence of computer art as a practice and as a part of the larger culture will be explored. The class will also look at historic andcontemporary examples of computer and electronic-based art. EMS 1 is an art studio in the full sense of artistic practice for creative expression. This class will require that you challenge your preconceived notions of computer-based art by expanding and challenging your vision, inventiveness, imagination and motivation. The successful student in this class will be highly self-directed and disciplined to explore new techniques for using the tools beyond the class lectures. Although mastery of the tools is encouraged, the successful student will be willing to explore,experiment, and invent new ways to achieve his/her creative goals.

Sound Signature student sound projects For this project you will compose a 5-minute sound signature. As expressed by DJ Spooky and the Futurist, sound is a powerful medium for expressing ideas,emotions, dreams and desires. We are all consumers of sound. Sometimeswe buy music that resonates with us. The lyrics hold a specialmeaning; the instrumentation sends shivers up and down our spine, make us laugh…. or make us cry. We are also constantly surrounded by noises… thequiet sharp drip from a leaky faucet, the sound of trucks rumbling down the street or children playing in the park, of fingers striking the keyboard.
