Now Variations
(1992) Vocal and Kalimba variation of Samuel Barbara's song "Sleep Now." This version is the soundtrack of the video "Sleep Now," completed in 1992. The video poem SLEEP NOW VARIATIONS is part of the American Art Song Project -- an interpretation of art songs, written in the late twentieth century by classical composers, into the 90's issues of race, gender and desire. This video poem is based on Samuel Barber's song "Sleep Now" set to an original poem by James Joyce. The vocal and kalimba arrangement of the song is written and performed by Pamela Jennings -- as well as the choreography. Text that appears in quotes is from Jeanette Winterson's novel "Sexing The Cherry," all other text by Pamela Jennings. SLEEP NOW VARIATIONS was produced at the Experimental Television Center using three Amiga computers live-to-tape. I've
Never (1992-93) Spoken word and electronic music accompiament for the video "I've Never," which was part of Shu Lea Cheangs collaborative project, "those fluttering objects of desire," 1992/93. "I'VE NEVER" created for the video installation "Those Fluttering Objects of Desire: coin operated joint installation," produced by Shu Lea Cheang. Original text, and music is by Pamela Jennings. Other text is from Anais Nin "Delta of Venus: Erotica,: and an academic paper on the sexualization of the black female body. Performed by Pamela Jennings and Jan Vanderlinden. "I'VE NEVER" deals with touch -- bringing someone close while simultaneously pushing them away. This is illustrated using a Tai Chi form of movement called Push Hands. The base text examines a graphic description of a racist sexualization of the black and white female bodies by Anais Nin and an academic paper written about the late 19th century grotesque sexual stereotyping of the black female body, particularly the "hottentot venus." Simultaneously, the spoken poems which surround this text speaks of an experience of dealing with ingrain racism as two bodies of differing race attempt to emotionally deal with their attraction toward each other. silence that allows... (1990)
"the silence that allows..." is a visual poem comprised of journal writings, performances and images which had been generated for many years. I have extracted and combined various works whose constant theme is a quest for understanding the dichotomies of race and gender which have inevitable influence over desire and the pursuit thereof -- a powerful combination which can often lead to a sense of "outsiderness."
