Spoken word and electronic music accompiament for the video "I've Never," which was part of Shu Lea Cheangs collaborative project, "those fluttering objects of desire,"

"I'VE NEVER" created for the video installation "Those Fluttering Objects of Desire: coin operated joint installation," produced by Shu Lea Cheang. Original text, and music is by Pamela Jennings. Other text is from Anais Nin "Delta of Venus: Erotica,: and an academic paper on the sexualization of the black female body. Performed by Pamela Jennings and Jan Vanderlinden. The video image was made using a "poloraid" like photo imaging process that was printed on a roll of paper. The exposed paper was fed back into the image making machine to produce the collage effect seen in the video stills below.

"I'VE NEVER" deals with touch -- bringing someone close while simultaneously pushing them away. This is illustrated using a Tai Chi form of movement called Push Hands. The base text examines a graphic description of a racist sexualization of the black and white female bodies by Anais Nin and an academic paper written about the late 19th century grotesque sexual stereotyping of the black female body, particularly the "hottentot venus." Simultaneously, the spoken poems which surround this text speaks of an experience of dealing with ingrain racism as two bodies of differing race attempt to emotionally deal with their attraction toward each other.
